Barkley, the "Cinderella" team, and tomorrow's games

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a great day! In the sweet sixteen, I went 50% in the picks I made on here, which is about right considering my bracket thus far. Today I'm going to expand a little and talk more about college basketball in general.

1. I'd like to start off the first point by giving props to Charles Barkley. That's right, I said it, Charles Barkley. For those of you who don't know who he is, Charles is a very interesting analyst for CBS right now. He played in the NBA for 16 years and is known as an all time great. After his basketball career was over, he has been known to make some bad decisions when it comes to alcohol, but still remains an regular analyst for TNT for NBA games. Since the basketball tournament expanded to four television networks this year, Charles has been part of the team that all networks go to before, after and during halftime of most all the games. At the beginning of the tournament Charles made his picks and said that Arizona would lose to Kansas in the Championship game. Everyone said he was nuts and blew him off because he usually says some ridiculous things, but so far so good as both teams are still in it and appear to be playing their way into the final four. Although critics may say Charles is crazy and shouldn't be listened to, you have to give him props for many of the picks he has made thus far.

2. When I filled out my bracket, I had picked St. Johns to make it to the Final Four in the SouthEast Region. Well earlier today, the Southeast region was decided by a team that few people picked last year to make it to the final and I'm sure, even less picked them this year. The Butler Bulldogs have just simply found a way to win against all odds and all types of teams and earlier today beat Florida in overtime to punch their ticket to Houston. Brad Stevens, coach of the Butler team is now 9 and 1 in the NCAA tournament. Those numbers speak for themselves.

3. Butler reaching the Final Four leads me to my main point I want to make today and that is about the so called Cinderella team. Butler cannot claim this title this year since VCU is still in the tournament. VCU will take on Kansas tomorrow, but I will talk more about that later. The idea of the Cinderella team is something that is overplayed and is unnesessary in college basketball today. Granted there are teams and schools such as Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Kentucky and so on that people expect to win and be in the final four every year. These expectations are unwarranted and should not be considered anymore. With the one and done rule in place for the NBA, student athletes are coming to school for a year because they have to and then  leaving. The school they attend is many times one of the "blue-bloods" of college basketball such as Kentucky, Kansas, or Duke. This means that these schools most likely have the best coaches in the nation and many times the most talented athletes, so people expect these schools to win every year. The idea of the "Cinderella" is that schools such as a Butler or a VCU do not get these great recruits, so they can never compete with schools such as Florida or Kentucky and so on. There is no need for the "Cinderella" label anymore because in the NCAA tournament, where it's one and done (single elimination) any team can beat anybody on any given day. These schools such as Butler, VCU, or even Richmond whom made it to the Sweet Sixteen, are teams that have great coaches who are usually younger, meaning they are closer to the age of the players and can relate to these players and know how to recruit them. These teams do not get the top recruits and the "one and done's", so the players on these teams are usually juniors and seniors. They are teams that have played together for at least two or three years and have bonded together and have experience playing with each other. When these senior laden teams start playing good enough to make the tournament, they can beat the "top programs" because these top programs do not have experience playing together, especially in such high pressure situations as the NCAA tournament, where if you play one bad half, you can lose to anyone as we have seen. The "Cinderella" team is just a term made up by the media in order to label what seems to be a lesser team, but if a team is playing this late in the year, they are anything but a "Cinderella."

4. As I finish up these 4 Points, it is currently half time of the Kemba vs. Derrick Williams show and Kemba is getting the best of Williams. I can only hope for a second half as good as the Butler vs. Florida match up I just watched earlier today. The games tomorrow will be very good as well. Kansas will take on VCU at 1:20 and then the final team will be decided for the Final Four when North Carolina takes on Kentucky in a true "blue blood" match up with so much basketball history between them, it is sure to be an instant classic. My picks for the rest of the games are as follows: UCONN 76 ARIZONA 74. And for tomorrow's games, KANSAS 82 VCU 68. and finally UNC 73 KENTUCKY 72.

Enjoy the games and please leave any questions or comments below! Thanks for reading!

Sweet Sixteen Part 2

With the second round tipoff's starting in just minutes, this will be a short 4 Points with just the match ups and the picks. Enjoy!

1. The first game of the evening will feature the North Carolina Tarheels against the surprise Big East team, Marquette. These two teams will play on CBS and will be a good match up of young teams. Buzz Williams, the coach for the Marquette Golden Eagles has been talked about because he may be leaving after the year to go to a bigger team but this game should come down to the very end. My guess is North Carolina 86 Marquette 83.

2. The second game will be the Kansas Jayhawks against the Richmond Spiders. The spiders are a very big underdog, but have been hot as of late. Obviously I'm hoping for Kansas to be up big by halftime and cruise in the second half, but anything can happen in the NCAA tournament, just ask Duke after last night. My prediction is Kansas 90 Richmond 75.

3. The nightcap will start out with Kentucky against Ohio State. This game should be called an NBA draft game because of all the future pros on the court for this one. There are many talented athletes on both teams but I believe that Ohio State has more seniors which will prove to be the deciding factor in this game. Ohio State 84 Kentucky 81

4. The final game is one that not many people will probably watch and is definitely one that no one picked in their brackets. Florida State vs. VCU. VCU is what many would call this year's Cinderella team. They are a team that many people didn't expect to get into the tournament and now are on a run that no one expected. The Florida State Seminoles have advanced this far because of their quality defense. I think this will be the end of the Cinderella's run, Florida State 77 VCU 71.

With the Elite Eight starting tomorrow, I will write a blog tomorrow during the games about the matchups and my thoughts on the rest of the weekend. Enjoy the games! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Sweet Sixteen Part 1

Welcome back everyone to another post! I hope your week is going as well as mine is. Let's get right down to the games tonight. Since there are only 4 games tonight, I'll use Parris' 4 Points today to preview the games:

1. The first round of the Sweet Sixteen starts tonight at 6:15 with a match up that I have been looking forward to since I saw the brackets come out. Fortunately, I actually picked this match up to happen, the University of Connecticut Huskies will play the San Diego State Atzecs. This is a game that features a senior laden team against a team that comes out of winning the Big East tournament and has possibly the best guard in this tournament in Kemba Walker. Kemba is among a select few that could win Player of the Year in the NCAA this year. I think that UConn is on a roll right now and even though Steve Fisher's team does not have to travel far for this game, they will win this matchup. UCONN 83 SDSU 79

2. The other early game on TBS will feature the only player that could possibly beat Kemba in a game of one on one, Jimmer Fredette. BYU will play against the Florida Gators in a rematch of last year's tournament. The two teams played one of the best games of last years tournament. Florida is a two seed so they would be slightly favored, but I do not think that the Gators, a team that got beat pretty bad in the SEC tournament championship game by Kentucky has the talent and athletes to stop Jimmer. I think that if Jimmer can get his average of about 34 points a game, then BYU will march onto the Elite Eight. BYU 73 Florida 71

3. The first number one seed to play this weekend will be the Duke Blue Devils who will play against the Arizona Wildcats, two teams who have a lot of NCAA tournament history. I saw an interesting stat on ESPN today that said Duke has never won a sweet sixteen game in the West Region. Although the Blue Devils have to fly across country and Arizona is already in the west, I think this stat may be broken tonight. Arizona has a future NBA player in Derrick Williams, but Duke definitely has more future Pros, not to mention Coack K. As much as I want Arizona to win because I think Duke escaped last weekends game against Michigan by not playing defense in the final ten minutes of the game, I think Duke will win this game. DUKE 86 ARIZONA 81

4. The final game of the evening features two teams that not many people picked in their brackets to play each other this weekend, the Butler Bulldogs against the Wisconsin Badgers. Neither team has any stand out players, but both teams just seem to find ways to win games. Wisconsin plays tough defense and has an experienced team with good three point shooters. The cinderella team of last year's tournament, Butler has the recent tournament experience, and as it would appear really good luck this year with solid players such as Shelvin Mack and Matt Howard. This game will probably be the least exciting of the evening to watch, but Butler continues to prove everyone, including me wrong so keep an eye on it. BUTLER 68 WISCONSIN 66

That's all for Parris' 4 Points today, Come back tomorrow to preview Friday's matchups, including the Kansas Jayhawks! Please leave any questions, comments, or suggestions below!

Basketball Weekend Hangover

Hello again everyone! I hope your weekend was as wonderful as mine. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to write over the weekend because I was too busy watching all the wonderful games and spending time celebrating a friend's 21st birthday. Thursday and Friday were the opening round games and my bracket was completely shot before the end of the day on Friday. Here's my 4 points for the day:

1. Picking brackets is something that is often done better by people who do not watch any games or know the teams very well. The prime example of this is the simple fact that my girlfriend, who hates watching basketball, is doing way better at predicting this year's tournament than I did. I lost St. Johns who was my final four team in the Southeast bracket region and then on Sunday, I lost Texas who was my final four team out of the West bracket region. Although I have lost two Final Four teams out of my bracket, my two Championship teams are still alive so all is not completely lost.

2. Every year March Madness brings some unbelievable finishes and upsets and the first weekend certainly did not disappoint! Pittsburgh, who was the number 1 seed in the Southeast Region lost to last year's cinderella team, Butler on Saturday night with a very controversial ending. The game was decided  on the free throw line in the last 2 seconds. The Texas/Arizona game in the West Region on Sunday afternoon was also somewhat controversial because of a referee calling a 5 second violation on a Texas inbound play that gave the ball back to Arizona with less than 20 seconds left and a chance to tie the game.

3. Sunday night was a very stressful one for me as my favorite team, the Kansas Jayhawks were playing against the Fighting Illini in the 2nd round game of the Southwest Region. I live in the state of Illinois so a vast majority of my friends are Illini fans. I received many text messages throughout the weekend with messages about the game since Kansas lost last year in the 2nd round of the tournament when they were the heavy favorite to win the whole tournament. Fortunately, Kansas won the game last night 73 to 59 and knock the Illini out of the tournament. Looking ahead as the tournament heads into the Sweet Sixteen starting on Thursday, the Southwest Region has the most surprising teams left with Kansas as the 1 seed and then Richmond (12 seed), VCU (11 seed), and Florida State (10 seed). Kansas will play Richmond on Friday night. The Jayhawks seem to have the easiest road to the final four with all higher seeds advancing but at this point in the tournament, seeding does not mean much since all the teams have been good enough to advance this far.

4. As for the rest of the tournament, this coming weekend should definitely prove to be just as good as last weekend, just without as many games. The teams are better and the competition is heating up as the pressure to make it through the weekend and get to the Final Four in Houston, Texas. Many people see Ohio State as the favorite to win the whole thing after their two impressive wins last weekend, but this weekend will show prove to be rough as they have to play a very quality team in Kentucky and then play the winner of North Carolina and Marquette in the Elite Eight. The other number one seed left is Duke in the West Region who will have to play the 4 seed Arizona and then the winner of Conneticut and San Diego State. There will be so many quality matchups this weekend that I can not wait to get to Thursday and watch them all throughout the weekend.

I will post another 4 points before Thursday with some predictions and must see matchups! Have a great week and do not forget to leave your questions and comments! Thanks for reading!

Finalizing the Opening Round Games

With just an hour and a half until the first game of this year's tournament, it's time to finalize that bracket that you have been struggling over for the past two days. Hopefully you have studied the team's and looked at their last ten games and match ups to see who is likely to win. Many people do not care about the play-in games tonight or tomorrow, but I think it is exciting. I will use this post to explain the games being played tonight to those of you who may not quite understand.

1. Due to the recent expansion of the tournament this year to 68 teams, four teams will play tonight and four teams will play tomorrow to get into the field of 64 that starts on Thursday. The tournament committee decided to have four teams who earned a bid to the tournament by winning their conference tournaments last week and four teams who received at large bids (meaning they were chosen to be in the tournament based on their entire body of work for the whole year, but they did lose in their conference tournaments last week) to have to play against each other tonight and tomorrow in order to get into the field of 64 to play on Thursday or Friday.

2. Tonight's games feature Arkansas-Little Rock vs. North Carolina-Asheville at 5:30 pm (Central time) on TruTv and then at 8 pm (CT) on the same channel UAB (University of Alabama-Birmingham) vs. Clemson University. My picks for these games are North Carolina-Asheville winning the first game and UAB winning the second game.

3. The winner of the first game tonight will have to face Pittsburgh, who is the number 1 seed in the SouthEast Region of the bracket on Thursday. The winner of the Clemson/UAB game will play earn a 12 seed and play West Virginia on Thursday in the East Region.

4. In the past tournaments, there was only one play in game, this year there are four. It is kind of  like an appetizer for the main meal coming on Thursday and Friday! In the past, this play in game really didn't matter, but these do. The right to earn a 12 seed is very important because as history has told us for the last ten years, every year, at least one number 12 seeded team wins in the first round against a 5 seed. Even with the NIT tournament starting tonight also, I know that I will definitely be watching these play-in games and getting excited for the big dance on Thursday and Friday! Enjoy the games tonight and come back tomorrow for my thoughts and picks for tomorrow's games!

Any comments or questions? Please comment! Thanks for reading!

Original Bracket Thoughts

First of all Happy March Madness to you all! This is the greatest time of the year for me and for all college basketball fans and I hope you enjoy it! My original thoughts on the brackets just getting released are:

1. Rock Chalk Jayhawk! As a Jayhawk fan, I'm excited about our number one seed and I think our bracket is fair. It doesn't seem to be the hardest or the easiest, but I like the match ups from first glance in our region.  Since I live in Illinois, a lot of my friends are Fighting Illini fans and if both Kansas and Illinois win their first round games, they could be playing each other on Sunday!

2. All the analysts are talking about the bubble teams that got left out right now, but in my opinion, no teams that deserved to get in were left out. With the recent expansion to 68 teams, the bubble was weaker already this year. Colorado, Virginia Tech, Missouri State, and  even Cleveland State were teams left out of the field of 68. Yes, these teams may have won some good games and beat some tournament teams, but if you did not make this field of 68 teams, then go win the NIT tournament and prove the selection committee wrong.

3. Once the full bracket came out, I went and printed off a bracket and filled it out within ten minutes just as a first instinct bracket. Many times I think people over think their brackets and mess it up. They listen to too many analysts and change their minds on teams. Make your picks and stick to them! Do not be afraid of your gut instinct! My final four on first glance is Ohio State, Texas, Kansas, and St. Johns. My first number one seed to lose in my bracket is Duke losing to number four seeded Texas in the West Region. The other number one seed to not make the final four is Pittsburgh, whom I have losing to St. Johns, a six seed, in the Elite Eight which is in the Southeast Region.

4. My last original thought on this bracket is about Florida getting a number two seed. I'm not sure how that happened after watching them struggle throughout the whole SEC championship game today against Kentucky, who got a 4 seed in Ohio State's bracket, the East.Of the number 2 seeds, Florida seemed to sneak in that region, possibly because it is the Southeast region, which favors Florida fans and the team traveling. Notre Dame certainly deserved a number two seed and so did San Diego State, a team that only has two losses on the year. North Carolina won the ACC regular season, so they deserve a two seed as well.

That is all for the original thoughts, I will write more tonight and definitely tomorrow after digesting all this information! Enjoy the Madness!
